Every few years the “plastic” rod companies change their rods trying to make the ultimate fly rod. They change design, material, construction, hardware and even color then give them new technical sounding names, and fishermen love to talk about those new rods. But when the quiet guy pulls his bamboo fly rod out and strings it up, like an old friend and fishing companion it no doubt is, he doesn’t say anything, he doesn’t have to.
Arundineria Amabilis – Tonkin cane, the same material used for over 100 years in the construction of quality bamboo fly rods, the reason more and more serious fly fishermen fish bamboo. Nature has been perfecting this material for thousands of years. The quiet guy knows this and what it does to the rod’s action and sensitivity. Besides, they are warm, natural and romantic, reeking of craftsmanship and tradition, quietly high tone and bamboo rods just make him feel good.
I build a limited number of hand crafted bamboo fly rods each year. Rods durable enough to be fished on a regular basis, yet beautiful enough to turn heads on the stream.
I also accept a limited number of individual students to build their own bamboo fly rod here in the Rod Shop. I will work with you to craft a beautiful two-piece, two-tip bamboo fly rod, which will become a faithful fishing companion and a valued family heirloom that you made yourself.
So if it is time for you to experience the pleasure of fishing bamboo or you just want to see how they are made, talk tapers, fishing or whatever, give me a call. Though I am usually in the rod shop and welcome visitors, you know how fishermen are, (research and development), so please call to make sure I am in.
